My middle school elective classes have been working on making large reproductions of Van Gogh paintings, using oil pastel. Each student was given a piece, and they had to draw and color it, and get it as close as possible to the original. They turned out beautiful! This also worked well as color mixing practice right before they did the watercolor flower paintings.

Here are a few projects my 6th graders have been working on. They first learned about Australian Aboriginal art and then created their own dot paintings of an animal(s) of their choice, often incorporating Aboriginal symbols. The students have such great imaginations and are so inventive! They also learned about Rangoli art, done during Diwali, the festival of lights, in India. Then, they created their own symmetrical, circular design, carefully measuring their designs when drawing it, and using pastel and colored sand to fill in the designs. Here are some of them!
My middle school students learned about the work 0f artist and naturalist Andy Goldsworthy. Then, working in small teams and using their natural materials and environment as inspiration, they created these transitory outdoor installations that went with the character of the space where they built them. Their problem solving skills were impressive! Here are the beautiful final pieces!
