As one of our first projects, I always like to have my students personalize their sketchbook covers. This time, we looked at and discussed the work of Kara Walker, who is known for her silhouettes. The students designed a cover that incorporated a silhouette and a background (abstract or a recognizable setting) that represented them in some way, after learning duct tape techniques. Duct tape can be used for so many creative projects, and is always a favorite! A few of the students, who were taking this elective with me again and had worked with duct tape before, had the option of doing something other than a silhouette. Here are some of these masterpieces!

This is a very exciting week for the Palmer art department! Several of our students, including one my of students (see work below) received awards at the Beaux Arts Student Showcase. One of Palmer's own even got Best In Show!!! This is a huge honor, as this show displays student work from all the public, private and art magnet schools in Miami-Dade county. I am so proud of our students and art team! Click here for more information.
Happy New Year! Hope everybody had a great holiday break. For the first short introductory project, middle school elective students started by making their own sandals! They constructed the shape out of cardboard, and then collaged images and/or words that reflected their interests, hobbies, and personality. Here are a few!
