The visual arts department was thrilled to have the end of the year art show off campus and out in the community. We were able to have it at the beautiful and spacious gallery space inside the downtown Truist building! We decided to exhibit elementary, middle and high school art in the same space. Each art student in all of the grade levels had at least one work that was up. I enjoyed having so many visitors at the show opening and I wrapped up the evening with the Upper School Art Award Ceremony to celebrate the work of the my artists. Congratulations everyone on your hard work this year!

I’ve been repeatedly blown away by how confident my learners have gotten in coming up with innovative and original ideas. At the beginning of the year, many of these students had no idea where to start when asked to design and implement their own ideas. As we did media boot camps in drawing, painting, printmaking, fiber arts, etc., and learned strategies to go through each step of the Artistic Thinking Process, they realized they had the tools to generate original artwork! Now we will be putting many of these pieces up at the Spring Art Show.
We covered many modes of printmaking: Gelli printing, linoleum carving and printing, screen printing and sun printing with cyanotypes. We are on a roll, literally and figuratively!
It was so wonderful to have our Artist In Residence, Melissa Walton, visit my classes this week. We learned so much about working in an Impressionist style, pastel application methods and layering techniques to capture the lighting and create vivid colors! Melissa’s work will be up at our art gallery through this month, and there will be an art opening this Thursday evening. Be sure to check it out!
Mind maps, name tags, value studies, media explorations, oh my! So much enthusiasm in my classes already. Looking forward to this year!
My advanced students have been working on an original body of work expressing themes, and so many students use art as a means to process and express the feelings and thoughts they had during the pandemic. I'm so proud of them for putting in their heart and hard work into these pieces.
